Valeda

Learn more about Valeda, the first-of-its-kind, non-injection treatment for Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

What is Valeda?

Valeda is the first-of-its-kind, non-injection treatment for Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). First approved in Europe in 2019, it received FDA approval in the United States in November 2024 after extensive clinical trials.

Using photobiomodulation (PBM), Valeda delivers specific wavelengths of low-level LED light to stimulate energy production in the eye, promoting healthier cells. This therapy has been shown to reduce drusen (yellow protein deposits beneath the retina) and slow the progression of Dry AMD. We are pleased to start offering this treatment to help improve the quality of life for our patients with Dry AMD.

Benefits/Details

✓ Non-Invasive: Valeda is not a laser. The light used in treatment can safely reach the eye without affecting surrounding tissues or bone. Patients have found it to be completely painless.

✓ Improve Vision: Studies show that after a year of treatment, patients were able to read, on average, one extra line on the eye chart.

✓ Safety: No phototoxicity or serious adverse events considered related to PBM treatment have been reported in Valeda clinical trials.

Treatment Schedule

Valeda is not a cure for Dry AMD, but it can help manage the condition and reduce symptoms. Ongoing treatment is necessary, following a schedule like this:

Over a 3–5 week period, you will receive a total of 9 treatments, each lasting about 10 minutes. This set of sessions is called a “treatment series.” A series is recommended every 4 months, totaling 3 series per year, or 27 treatments annually.
